Biography

Sean Fraga is an Assistant Professor (Teaching) in the Department of Environmental Studies and History at the University of Southern California. He is an environmental historian focusing on the North American West and the eastern Pacific Ocean during the long nineteenth century. His research encompasses the connections between U.S. imperial expansion, Native sovereignty, technology, and the environment. Fraga's work in digital humanities emphasizes digital mapping and the scholarly use of augmented reality. His current book project, titled 'Ocean Fever: Steam Power, Transpacific Trade, and American Colonization of Puget Sound,' is under contract with Yale University Press. Sean Fraga holds a Ph.D. in History from Princeton University, where he completed his studies in January 2019. He also obtained an M.A. in History from Princeton in May 2015 and a Bachelor's degree in American Studies with distinction from Yale University in May 2010. Additionally, he served as an Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in the USC–Mellon Humanities Digital World Program from August 2020 to August 2022.
