Biography

Sean Gurd is a scholar in the field of Classics, currently serving as the Floyd Cailloux Centennial Professor and Department Chair at the University of Texas at Austin. He holds a PhD from the University of Toronto. Gurd’s primary research interests include Ancient Theatre, especially tragedy, and Ancient Music. His work also explores the intellectual culture interfacing with concepts of art and techne. He has a secondary interest in 20th century avant-gardes, particularly in the Americas. Gurd directs the Ancient Music Performance Lab, where he investigates innovative ways to integrate arts practice with humanities scholarship. He has authored four monographs, including 'Iphigenias Aulis: Textual Multiplicity' and 'Radical Philology'. In addition, he has edited volumes such as 'Philology Histories' and co-edited 'Pataphilology' (Irreader). Gurd is also in the process of writing a book about the poet and performance artist Arman Schwerner.
