Biography

Sean Hennessy leads the Center for Real-World Effectiveness and Safety Therapeutics (CREST) at the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on evaluating the real-world effectiveness and safety of prescription drugs using healthcare data. He examines serious health consequences from drug-drug interactions, particularly involving high-risk medications such as anticoagulants and treatments for diabetes. His studies have identified a survival benefit for potassium supplement users taking loop diuretics and have shown that warmer outdoor temperatures increase the survival benefit of statin drugs. Hennessy has also contributed to the development of drug utilization review programs under Medicare Part D and co-led studies on the safety and effectiveness of vaccines for Japanese encephalitis. His leadership roles include serving as chair of the National Institutes of Health's study section on Health Services Quality and Effectiveness and as scientific program chair for the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology.
