Biography

Sean Victor Hum was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He received B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Calgary in 1999, 2001, and 2006 respectively. From 1997 to 2006, he worked at TRLabs on a variety of projects related to wireless radio-over-fiber applications. In 2006, he joined the Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Toronto, where he currently serves as a Professor and holds the Eugene V. Polistuk Chair in Electromagnetic Design. He was a visiting scientist at the European Space Agency in 2014 and a visiting professor at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM). Professor Hum leads the RADIANCE laboratory at the University of Toronto, where he supervises students conducting research in areas such as advanced electromagnetic surfaces and reconfigurable antennas for space applications. His work has received several accolades, including the Governor General's Gold Medal for his research on radio-on-fiber systems, the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society Student Paper Award, and the ASTech Leaders Award for his contributions to reconfigurable antennas. He has also received multiple teaching awards during his career. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and has served as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation. Dr. Hum is also involved in various committees and organizations, reflecting his active engagement in the field of antenna engineering and electromagnetic design.
