Sean Johnson is an observational astronomer primarily studying galaxies, supermassive black holes, and the surrounding gas that supplies fuel for growth. He combines datasets from space-based and large ground-based telescopes to investigate the physical conditions that enable galaxies to continue forming stars. His research identifies chemical signatures of heavy elements produced by supernova explosions that are deposited in intergalactic space by galactic-scale winds and galaxy interactions. Currently, he is the co-PI of the Cosmic Ultraviolet Baryon Survey (CUBS) and is leading the wide-field ground-based follow-up of the MUSE Quasar Blind Emitter Survey (MUSEQuBES), which aims to increase samples for CGM studies at redshifts less than 1. Prior to joining the University of Michigan, Sean was a Hubble Carnegie-Princeton Postdoctoral Fellow at Princeton University and regularly volunteered for the Prison Teaching Initiative. He completed his graduate studies at the University of Chicago and has authored several papers highlighting current areas of research.
