Sean O'Byrne obtained undergraduate physics education degrees from the University of New England, followed by Master's and PhD degrees in physics from Australian National University. His PhD research focused on temperature velocity distributions in hypersonic wake flows. From 2002 to 2004, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at NASA Langley Research Center, where he studied supersonic combustion processes. After this, he was awarded a Vice Chancellor's fellowship at the University of New South Wales from 2004 to 2006. He joined the faculty of UNSW Canberra in 2006 and undertook research in laser-based diagnostics. In 2023, he became a Professor of Aerospace Engineering at ANU. O'Byrne is a senior member of Optica and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics professional societies, and serves as an editor for Shock Waves and Frontiers in Physics journals. He is also a member of the International Advisory Committee for the International Symposium on Rarefied Gas Dynamics. Throughout his career, he has supervised 18 PhD students, with 10 as the primary supervisor. His qualifications include a BSc (Hons), Dip. Ed. from UNE, and MSc and PhD from ANU.
