Biography

Sean Patterson, MD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine. He specializes in inpatient psychiatric care, focusing on adult mood disorders. Dr. Patterson is the interim medical director of the adult mood disorders unit at Yale New Haven Psychiatric Hospital, where he works closely with a treatment team that includes social workers, pharmacists, nurses, and medical trainees. His clinical focus is to help individuals in immediate, acute crises by providing safety, optimizing psychiatric medications, clarifying diagnostic questions, and delivering psychoeducation and brief therapy to patients and their family members. He is dedicated to treating a wide range of mental health concerns, including depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and catatonia, utilizing interventional services such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and ketamine. Dr. Patterson is also active in advocacy work surrounding mental illness and LGBTQ+ legislation, seeking to understand how recent policy changes affect health outcomes and access to resources for patients.
