Biography

Sean Prigge is a structural biologist and parasitologist focused on the essential nutrients and metabolic pathways of malaria parasites. His research investigates the apicoplast, a key organelle in malaria parasites that is thought to have arisen from endosymbiosis with an alga that previously incorporated a cyanobacterium. Due to its prokaryotic origin, the apicoplast contains a range of metabolic pathways that differ significantly from those in the human host. Prigge is particularly interested in biochemical pathways related to the apicoplast, especially those required for the biosynthesis and modification of fatty acids. His work looks at the metabolism of malaria parasites, particularly with respect to enzyme cofactors such as pantothenate, lipoic acid, biotin, and iron-sulfur clusters, which are essential for their growth during the blood stage.
