Dr. Sean Vrieland

Biography

Sean Vrieland is an Associate Professor at the University of Copenhagen specializing in the development of Nordic languages from written sources, with a focus on Late Medieval and Early Modern manuscripts. He defended his Ph.D. dissertation in December 2017, which explored medieval language on Gotland, Old Gutnish, and written sources, particularly examining post-medieval manuscripts copied by Danish priests on the island during the sixteenth century. His research interests include philological disciplines, paleography, codicology, and textual criticism. Over the last five years, he has engaged in significant collaborations in his field and contributed to numerous scholarly activities, including lectures and editorial work for research journals. Vrieland's work is characterized by a commitment to advancing the understanding of historical texts and their implications within the context of Nordic linguistic development.
