Biography

Sean Yung-Hsiang Wang is a distinguished violinist and academic originally from Taiwan. He has been hailed by the American Record Guide as 'a brilliant violinist' and recognized for the exceptional quality of his performances. His extensive performance history spans North America, Europe, and Asia, and he is an advocate for contemporary intercultural music. As the Co-Artistic Director of INTERWOVEN in New York City, he promotes new works that blend Western and Asian musical elements. Wang has made critically acclaimed recordings and held the position of concertmaster with the Grammy-nominated ensemble Ars Lyrica Houston. Before joining the University of Toronto, he was on faculty at Longy School of Bard College, where he served as Director of Orchestra and Chair of Strings, and he also taught at the University of Connecticut, University of Houston, and Vanderbilt University. He has conducted master classes at major universities across North America and Asia and has taught and performed at summer festivals in Italy, Denmark, Germany, France, and the USA. As an educator, he conducted symphonies, concertos, and new compositions, and led full opera productions. Wang has engaged in scholarly discourse on Asian-American interculturalism and 19th-century performance practices at international conferences like the College Music Society and American Musicological Society. He received his education with full scholarships at the Curtis Institute of Music, Juilliard School, and Stanford University, where he studied under eminent teachers in violin, conducting, and musicology.
