Dr. Sean Willcock

Biography

Sean Willcock is a Departmental Lecturer in History of Art at the University of Oxford, with a distinguished academic background that includes previous roles such as Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at Birkbeck, University of London. He has held various teaching positions, including at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Hong Kong and at Yale's London programme. Willcock received his PhD from the University of York in 2014, where his thesis focused on the imagery surrounding political crises during the British Raj. His research has garnered funding from prominent organizations including the Art and Humanities Research Council and the Yale Center for British Art. As Reviews Editor for the journal 'History of Photography', he explores themes related to art, photography, and print culture throughout the long nineteenth century, particularly the visual legacies of the British Empire. His notable monograph, 'Victorian Visions of War and Peace: Aesthetics, Sovereignty, and Violence in the British Empire, c. 1851-1900', was published in November 2021.
