Biography

Sebastiaan Jonkman is a Research Professor in Marine Coastal Environmental Science at Texas A&M University. He is also a Hagler Fellow with the Hagler Institute for Advanced Study for the 2022-2023 class. Jonkman has extensive experience in civil engineering, particularly in the areas of hydraulic structures, flood risk management, and flood defenses. He received his Doctor Philosophy in Civil Engineering from Delft University of Technology in 2007, and he holds a Master of Science and Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the same institution, awarded in 2001 and 1998, respectively. Jonkman's research focuses on understanding and mitigating the impacts of floods and climate change on coastal regions. He has conducted significant studies on flood fatalities, flood loss trends in Europe, and risk analysis related to flood events such as Hurricane Katrina. In addition to his research, Jonkman holds various professional appointments, including scientific director of the Pandemics Disaster Preparedness Center at Erasmus MC, co-chairman of the Dutch national Hydraulic Engineering Day, and membership in several expert panels and committees relating to water management and flood protection. He has been recognized with multiple awards for his contributions to the field.
