Biography

Sebastiaan Overeem is a Full Professor at the Eindhoven University of Technology, where he leads the Signal Processing Systems group within the Department of Electrical Engineering. He specializes as a clinical somnologist and holds the chair in Advanced Sleep Monitoring. His research focuses on the development, validation, and implementation of innovative diagnostic and monitoring methods for sleep disorders. Overeem possesses broad expertise in the field of sleep medicine, with a significant emphasis on narcolepsy and the biology of sleep-regulating hypocretin systems. His pioneering work has established a crucial link between sleep and Parkinson’s disease, demonstrating that defects in hypocretin can lead to sleep disturbances. This interplay presents a technological challenge, prompting collaborative research efforts with the Eindhoven MedTech Innovation Center to enhance the diagnosis of sleep disorders through new non-obtrusive measurement modalities and advanced analytical methods. Objective measures and subjective assessments of sleep experiences and symptoms are key components of his research. In clinical practice, Overeem works as a sleep medicine specialist at the Center for Sleep Medicine Kempenhaeghe. He has published over 280 peer-reviewed papers, amassing more than 14,000 citations, with an H-index of 59 and an i10 index of 159, highlighting his significant contributions to the field.
