Biography

Prof. Sebastian Günther conducts research in surface science and heterogeneous catalysis, utilizing models to image catalytic reactions and processes at interfaces. His work employs microscopy and spectroscopic techniques, with a particular focus on scanning tunneling microscopy, photoelectron microscopy, and low energy electron microscopy (LEEM). The research aims to enable studies under elevated pressure conditions using ultra-high vacuum models. He studied physics at Munich's Ludwig Maximilian University, earning his doctorate in scanning tunneling microscopy from the University of Ulm in 1995. Following a postdoctoral stay at the ELETTRA Synchrotron Light Laboratory in Trieste, he received a Marie Curie Fellowship to continue research there. In 2003, he obtained his lecturing qualification from the University of Hanover and subsequently worked as an assistant professor scientist before his appointment as Chair at the Technical University of Munich in 2010, having previously worked at LMU Munich.
