Biography

Sebastian Kortmann graduated in Dutch Law from the University of Groningen (cum laude) in 1973 and was awarded a Ph.D. (cum laude) in 1977 for his thesis entitled 'Derdenwerking van aansprakelijkheidsbedingen' (The Effect of Exemption Clauses Parties). From 1973 to 1977, he worked as an academic staff member at Radboud University and from 1978 to 1984, he practiced as a solicitor in Nijmegen. In 1984, he became a Professor of Civil Law at Radboud University and held the position of Dean of the Faculty of Law from 1998 to 2001. He served as Rector Magnificus of Radboud University from 2007 to 2014. He chaired the Law Faculty’s civil law section and was involved with the board of various research and academic centers, totaling more than 250 scientific publications focusing on civil law, insolvency law, and credit. Additionally, he has held several positions in various boards and has been a Deputy Justice at the Arnhem-Leeuwarden Court of Appeal since 2015. He has also chaired multiple foundations and is a member of integrity advisory councils.
