Biography

Sebastian von Massow is a postdoctoral fellow and Associate Editor at EJIL:Talk!. He holds a Ph.D. in Public International Law from the European University Institute in Florence. His thesis, titled 'Litigating Colonial Self-Determination', involved extensive fieldwork, analyzing court submissions and conducting hundreds of interviews. His research considers how international law can serve as a significant tool for anticolonial campaigns when viewed from the diverse perspectives of global actors. Sebastian is engaged in projects addressing how states manipulate legal frameworks in the context of territorial annexation, as well as exploring Euro-African treatymaking practices in relation to colonialism and European integration. His areas of interest include public international law, non-state actors, legal strategies, litigation, colonialism, decolonization, and socio-legal methods.
