Biography

Sébastien Caquard is a professor in the Department of Geography, Planning and Environment at Concordia University and serves as the Graduate Program Director for both the MSc and PhD programs. His research primarily intersects Cartography and Oral History, focusing on how mapping stories can reveal complex relationships among places, narratives, and memories. He is the founder and director of the Geomedia Lab, where he led the development of Atlascine, an open-source mapping application designed to honor and document narratives through cartographic means. His work includes producing online atlases such as the Atlas of Rwandan Life Stories. Caquard has been involved in numerous research projects and has served as a co-director of the Centre for Oral History and Digital Storytelling. He has also held various leadership roles in the International Cartographic Association and actively engages in workshops, exhibitions, and other outreach activities that promote alternative cartographic practices and Indigenous mapping methodologies. His scholarly contributions include several significant publications and a continued commitment to exploring how geography and storytelling can enrich our understanding of human experiences.
