Biography

Secil Yilmaz is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research primarily focuses on the intersections of sexuality, gender, medicine, and science in the Ottoman Empire and modern Turkey. She explores the formation of knowledge practices and the political and social encounters of diverse historical agents in contexts shaped by colonialism and imperialism. Her book, in-progress, titled "Biopolitical Empire: Syphilis, Medicine, and Sex in the Late Ottoman World," investigates the implications of syphilis related to empire-building and modern governance. Yilmaz's projects include researching the relationships between religion, emotions, and the history of contagious diseases in the late Ottoman Empire, in addition to historical reproductive health technologies and humanitarianism in the modern Middle East. She teaches several courses on topics related to Middle Eastern history and the politics of gender and sexuality.
