Dr. Sedef Arat Koç

Biography

Sedef Arat-Koç is an Associate Professor in the Department of Politics and Public Administration at Toronto Metropolitan University. She earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Toronto, where her thesis focused on the Peasants, Hegemony, and the Politics of ‘Normal Times’ through cases involving the Republican People's Party and the Democrat Party in Turkey. She also holds a Master of Arts in Sociology from the University of Waterloo and a Bachelor of Arts from Bogazici University in Turkey. Sedef joined the Department of Politics and Public Administration in January 2006, coming from her previous role as an Associate Professor in the Women’s Studies Program in the Department of Sociology at Trent University. Her research interests include immigration policy and citizenship, with a particular focus on the experiences of immigrant women, as well as transnational feminism, imperialism, racial politics, and the reconfiguration of social and political identities within the context of neoliberal globalization. Currently, she is investigating the concept of 'whiteness' in Turkey within the broader cultural and political landscape shaped by class identity and the geopolitical shifts of the post-Cold War era.
