Biography

Selin Dilli is an interdisciplinary scholar at Utrecht University, specializing in the intersections of social science theories, methods, and historical analysis. Her research focuses on institutional and structural changes that shape gender (in)equality and well-being outcomes, including health, politics, household roles, work, and female entrepreneurship throughout the long twentieth century. Her PhD introduced new open-access data tracing global gender gap trends since 1900. During her postdoctoral research in a Horizon 2020 project, she examined the institutional complementarities that account for diversity in entrepreneurship across Europe and its policy implications. Currently, her NWO-Veni project investigates the historical development of female entrepreneurship in Europe since 1900, exploring the barriers women faced in starting and running businesses, the challenges that evolved, and the strategies women employed to overcome these challenges. Dilli is co-editing a special issue of Business History titled “Where Have the Business Women Gone?” (2023-2025) and co-supervises interdisciplinary PhD projects on gender equality in family firms and the role of associative orders in well-being and precarious work. She is a core member of the interdisciplinary research platform Bottom-up Initiatives for Societal Change and Institutions in Open Societies. Dilli has extensive experience in designing and teaching interdisciplinary courses, and from 2020 to 2023, she served as a Board Member of the History PPE bachelor’s program, where she coordinated student skills training and led curriculum development projects for interdisciplinary professional skills. Additionally, she co-edited the textbook titled Interdisciplinary PPE Approach to 21st-Century Grand Challenges, which is set to be published by Routledge in 2026.
