Dr. Selvadurai Dayanandan

Biography

Selvadurai Dayanandan is a Professor and the Associate Dean of Research Infrastructure at Concordia University's Faculty of Arts and Science. His academic background includes a PhD from Boston University and postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Massachusetts-Boston and the University of Alberta. Professor Dayanandan specializes in evolutionary genomics, microbiomics, molecular systematics, population genetics, phylogeography, and biodiversity conservation. His research program aims to understand the processes that underlie the evolutionary origin and maintenance of biological diversity, with a specific focus on the ecology, evolution, and genomics of forest trees. Current laboratory projects include studies on community assembly in forest trees and the population genetics of microbiomes in both tropical and temperate ecosystems. He serves as an associate editor for BOTANY and is actively involved in various scientific communities, including the Quebec Centre for Biodiversity Sciences and the Global Forest Biodiversity Initiative. Professor Dayanandan has held multiple administrative and governance roles at Concordia University, including chairing the Biology Department and serving as a committee member on various boards and senates. His teaching includes courses on plant biology, conservation genetics, and molecular phylogenetics, among others. Over the years, he has published extensively in various notable journals and actively contributes to academic and environmental discussions regarding biodiversity preservation.
