Biography

Seng Kuan is an architectural historian and theorist who serves as a Lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and is also a Project Associate Professor and Director of the International Architectural Education Platform at the University of Tokyo. His scholarly work focuses on Japan’s postwar architectural culture and he has written extensively on topics related to the Metabolists, modern Japanese architecture, and structural engineering. Kuan has held significant editorial positions, including as Chief Editorial Advisor for the Tokyo-based journal a+u, where he guides the publication's editorial agenda. He is deeply involved in curatorial projects that embody his research methodology, with exhibitions such as 'Utopia Scales: Highlights from the Kenzō Tange Archive' and 'Metabolism: City of the Future'. Kuan has been awarded major grants from the Graham Foundation and the Japan Foundation for his research projects. He earned a Bachelor's degree from Harvard College and a PhD in architectural history from the Harvard Graduate School of Design after studying both architecture and urban planning. Before joining the faculty at Harvard, Kuan taught at Washington University in St. Louis.
