Dr. Pakpour joined UBC in 2018 as an Assistant Professor in the School of Engineering. She is a highly accomplished researcher with a track record of academic excellence, holding a PhD from UBC, followed by a Postdoctoral appointment at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. Her fundamental research interest lies in understanding the forces and factors influencing the human microbiome and how microorganisms interact with their environment and hosts. Dr. Pakpour is focused on translating basic microbiome discoveries into applications spanning bioengineering, biomaterials, and medicine. She has initiated and led several joint international projects, currently leading microbiome research as part of the Nurse Engagement Wellness Study (NEWS) and the Human Virus Project at the MIT Center for Microbiome Informatics and Therapeutics. Her laboratory at UBC, the Biomedical Microbiome Research (BMR) laboratory, aims to advance microbiome science as it relates to health and disease. Dr. Pakpour has received numerous prestigious awards including from the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Nature et technologies (FRQNT) and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).
