Septimiu Murgu is an interventional pulmonologist with specific expertise in minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopic pleural procedures. He has contributed significantly to the understanding of tracheobronchomalacia (TBM) and excessive dynamic airway collapse (EDAC), leading projects on airflow dynamics and classification of these disorders. His work has recognized EDAC as a pathophysiologic entity distinct from TBM. Through collaboration with international researchers and biomedical engineers, he has initiated evaluations using multimodal bronchoscopic imaging techniques such as optical coherence tomography and radial endobronchial ultrasound to study benign central airway disorders. He serves on the Board of Directors for the American Association for Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology (AABIP), and has held roles with the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP), including serving as a governor and member of the writing panel for the 3rd edition of the ACCP Lung Cancer Guidelines. His clinical research interests focus on interventions for patients suffering from benign and malignant airway obstruction, and he is active in educational projects in bronchoscopy lung cancer education. Current research interests are molecular profiling for lung cancer diagnosis, airflow physiology of TBM and EDAC, and the application of novel imaging techniques to enhance outcomes in interventional airway procedures.
