Biography

Sera Markoff is a Professor at the University of Amsterdam, specializing in theoretical astrophysics with a focus on accretion processes around compact objects such as black holes. After earning her PhD from the University of Arizona in 2000, she held a Humboldt Research Fellowship at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy and a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship at MIT. She began her faculty career at UvA in 2006 and has received several prestigious grants, including the NWO Vidi, Vici, and the EU Marie Curie ITN. Markoff was named a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2014 and served as the Tinsley Centennial Visiting Professor at UT Austin in 2015. Her research straddles both theoretical and observational astrophysics, particularly focusing on how black holes release energy in various forms. She actively contributes to GRAPPA and coordinates science working groups for next-generation facilities such as the Cherenkov Telescope Array and the Event Horizon Telescope. In addition to her research, she is dedicated to teaching and has developed interactive techniques for her introductory and graduate-level courses in Cosmology and High-Energy Astrophysics.
