Biography

Sera Markoff is a Professor at the University of Amsterdam, specializing in Theoretical Astrophysics. She obtained her PhD from the University of Arizona in 2000 and has held prestigious fellowships such as the Humboldt Research Fellowship at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Germany and the National Science Foundation Astronomy & Astrophysics Postdoctoral Fellowship at MIT in the USA. Her research focuses on understanding accretion processes around compact objects, investigating black holes, their energy release mechanisms, and the associated high-energy particles and outflows. Markoff is actively involved in both observational and theoretical astrophysics and astroparticle physics, and is a member of the GRAPPA group. In addition to her research, she enjoys teaching and has implemented interactive techniques in her courses, including 'Introduction to Cosmology' at the BSc level and 'High-Energy Astrophysics: Radiative Processes and Relativistic Flows' at the MSc level. She also plays a significant role in science working groups for collaborative projects like the Cherenkov Telescope Array and the Event Horizon Telescope.
