Biography

Serena Eley is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Washington. She previously held a faculty position at the Colorado School of Mines in the Physics Department. Dr. Eley earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from Caltech before conducting research at the International Superconductivity Technology Center in Tokyo, Japan, as a Henry Luce Scholar. She obtained her Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where her dissertation work focused on the proximity effects and vortex dynamics in nanostructured superconductor-normal-metal arrays, revealing significant deviations from conventional theories. Her research experience includes positions at Sandia National Laboratories, where she designed silicon-based devices with quantum dot nanostructures, and as a postdoctoral researcher at Los Alamos National Laboratory, focusing on vortex dynamics in superconductors. Currently, Dr. Eley leads a research group that explores the study of superconducting magnetic materials and devices, investigating topics such as vortex dynamics in superconductors, skyrmion dynamics, and energy loss mechanisms in superconductors. She has received numerous accolades, including the American Institute of Physics – NSBP Joseph Johnson Award for Excellence in Experimental Physics and the NSF CAREER Award.
