Biography

Serge Ferrari obtained his MD from the University of Geneva in 1991 and completed his specialization in internal medicine in 1997. From 1997 to 2001, he was a Research Clinical Fellow at the Division of Bone Diseases at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. In 1999, he served as an Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He returned to Geneva, where he was awarded an SNSF professorship and appointed Deputy Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Medicine in 2001. He became an Associate Physician in the Department of Bone Diseases at HUG in 2007 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2008. In September 2014, he was appointed Full Professor and Head of the Division of Bone Diseases, and he served as Academic Director of the Department of Medicine from 2019 to 2023. He leads the Bone Diseases Research Laboratory and the Osteoporosis Genetics Research Group, focusing on the biological mechanisms regulating bone remodeling and therapeutic targets for bone fragility. He is the Vice-Chairman of the Scientific Council of the International Osteoporosis Foundation and served as President of the Swiss Osteoporosis Association from 2016 to 2024. Additionally, he is the Editor-in-Chief of the journals BoneKey and BoneKey Reports, and he is a member of several editorial boards in his field.
