Biography

Born in Frunze, USSR, Sergey Yurchenko earned his Physics Diploma with Honours from Tomsk State University and received his PhD in 1997. He has worked as a research associate at Wuppertal University, the Steacy Institute of NRC Canada under a NERC Fellowship, and at Muelheim-an-der Ruhr, with a Max Planck Fellowship at TU Dresden. In 2011, he joined the Department of Physics & Astronomy at University College London, where he manages the ExoMol project. Sergey was promoted to Reader in Physics in 2016 and became a Professor in 2019. His research focuses on the spectroscopic properties of hot polyatomic molecules, particularly in the context of exoplanets and cool stars. The ExoMol project aims to produce and utilize molecular line lists for the characterization of atmospheres of exoplanets and stars, aiding in the analysis of observations from space telescopes like JWST and Hubble. He also organizes the Physics Astronomy Festival, PandA Day, which celebrates the talents within the department through performances by students, postdocs, staff, and academics.
