Biography

Sergi Garcia-Manyes graduated with a BSc in Chemistry from the University of Barcelona in 2000 and obtained an MSc in Analytical Chemistry in 2001, followed by a PhD in Physical Chemistry in 2005 under the supervision of Prof. Fausto Sanz. His PhD focused on the study of nanomechanical properties of well-defined surfaces using Scanning Probe Microscopy techniques, primarily Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). He has had notable research visits to the Materials Science Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the Biology Department at Columbia University. From 2005 to 2012, he worked with Prof. Julio Fernandez at Columbia University as a postdoctoral researcher. In 2012, he established a laboratory at King’s College London, where he is currently a tenured professor in the Department of Physics and a group leader in Structural Biology at the Randall Division of Cell and Molecular Biophysics. His multidisciplinary research group aims to understand how mechanical force affects cellular membranes' mechanical stability and individual protein dynamics. Over the years, Sergi has received several grants, including from the European Union and the Royal Society, and he has received accolades such as the 2012 award from the Spanish Biophysical Society. His primary research interests revolve around the molecular mechanisms that confer mechanical stability to cellular structures and the effects of mechanical forces on chemical reactions and folding dynamics.
