Biography

Sergio Maldonado's research encompasses a wide range of topics within Environmental Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics, focusing on the dynamics of fluid-particle interactions involving algae and plastics, as well as the application of AI through Physics Informed Neural Networks to enhance computational fluid dynamics. His work delves into fundamental physical processes in open channels, rivers, and coastal zones, contributing to a better understanding of sediment transport and morphodynamics. Maldonado has developed numerical models to quantify the protective roles of coastal ecosystems and has engaged in theoretical investigations of nearshore hydrodynamics and water quality. He is a member of the Water Environmental Engineering Group, dedicated to pioneering experimental fluid mechanics techniques. Currently, he teaches courses on Environmental Hydraulics and Numerical Methods at the University of Southampton.
