Biography

Sergio Munoz-Gomez is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Purdue University. His research focuses on the interface of microbiology, cell biology, and evolutionary biology, particularly examining how cellular complexity increases. He is interested in the evolutionary transformation of prokaryotic cells into larger eukaryotic cells and the emergence of symbioses that give rise to symbiotic organelles. His current research topics include the origin of eukaryotes and mitochondria, the origin and function of purple photosymbioses, experimental evolution of symbiosis, and evolutionary cell physiology. He employs experimental, computational, and theoretical approaches and works with diverse microbial organisms such as ciliates, small flagellates, algae, and purple bacteria. Munoz-Gomez obtained his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Dalhousie University and has served as an EMBO Postdoctoral Fellow at Universite Paris-Saclay, France.
