Dr. Sergio Vernuccio

Biography

Sergio Vernuccio joined the University of Southampton in 2024 as an Associate Professor in Chemical Engineering. He holds both BEng and MEng degrees in Chemical Engineering from the University of Naples Federico II, Italy, and an MSc in Design and Construction of Process Plants from Sapienza University of Rome. He began his career as a Process Engineer at Technip, focusing on the design and reconfiguration of refinery process units for petrochemical plants. In 2017, Dr. Vernuccio completed his PhD in Process Engineering at ETH Zurich, Switzerland, where he specialized in the application of structured reactors for three-phase reactive processes in fine chemicals manufacturing. Following his PhD, he worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Professor Linda J. Broadbelt's group at Northwestern University in the USA, where he investigated acid-based oligomerization mechanisms of olefins over zeolites to enhance shale gas upgrading. From 2019 to 2024, he was a Lecturer in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Sheffield, UK. Dr. Vernuccio is a Chartered Engineer, a Member of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), a Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He serves on the editorial boards of Chemical Engineering Science and the Chemical Engineering Journal Advances and is an active reviewer for numerous academic journals and funding organizations.
