Serhy Yekelchyk received his BA from Kyiv University and his MA from the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, later earning a PhD in Russian and Eastern European History from the University of Alberta. He has been teaching at the University of Victoria since 2001 after a year at the University of Michigan. His research interests include the social and political history of the Stalin era, as well as the formation of modern Ukrainian nationhood from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. Yekelchyk’s notable work, 'Ukraine: Birth of a Modern Nation', published by Oxford University Press in 2007, has been translated into five languages and addresses Western perceptions of Ukraine including its experiences during the Orange Revolution. His other significant publications investigate Stalinist culture, political rituals during late Stalinism, and the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian conflict. He is also involved in supervising graduate and Honours students, focusing on aspects of Russian and Eastern European history and culture, while teaching a variety of courses related to his research.
