Dr. Seth Cluett

Biography

Seth Cluett is a performer, artist, and scholar associated with the Data Science Institute at Columbia University, where he serves as a lecturer and the director of the Computer Music Center in the Music Department. His research focuses on sensory computation, sound extended reality, human-machine communication, and media history, particularly concerning loudspeakers. Cluett's artistic practice engages with themes of ecological collapse and resilience, often utilizing materials and processes found in nature. He has received grants from organizations such as Meet the Composer, the New York State Council on the Arts, and New Music USA. His work has been showcased internationally in prestigious venues like the Whitney Museum and MoMA/PS1, as well as in contemporary art events like CONTEXT Art Miami, and institutions like GRM and STEIM. His concert compositions have been commissioned by ensembles including the TAK Ensemble and the Hong Kong Sinfonietta. Cluett's works, such as 'Line', 'Sedimental', and 'Winds Measure', have been documented through recordings. He has also held positions as an artist-in-residence at Nokia Bell Labs and is involved with the Visual Arts Program and Center for Comparative Media at Columbia University.
