Biography

Seth Perry joined the Princeton faculty in 2014 and has focused on American religious history, particularly print culture and religious authority. His book, 'Bible Culture and Authority in the Early United States' (Princeton University Press, 2018), examines the performative, rhetorical, and material aspects of bible-based authority in early national America. His article, 'Paine Detected in Mississippi: Slavery, Print Culture, and the Threat of Deism in the Early Republic', appeared in the William and Mary Quarterly in April 2021. Perry is currently working on 'American Preacher: The Life of Eccentric Lorenzo Dow', a biography of one of the most famous itinerant preachers of the early national period, set to be published in 2026 by the University of Pennsylvania Press. Other projects include research on little-known revelations from John Taylor, a prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and a study of animals in early American religious history. His writing has been featured in various publications, including Early American Studies, the Journal of Scholarly Publishing, the Chronicle of Higher Education, and Slate.
