Biography

Seth Rockman is the George L. Littlefield Professor of American History. His research focuses on the intersection of slavery studies, labor history, material culture studies, and the history of capitalism in the early Republic of the United States. Rockman is known for his award-winning publication 'Scraping By: Wage Labor, Slavery, and Survival in Early Baltimore' (2009) and co-edited 'Slavery’s Capitalism: A New History of American Economic Development' (2016). He is currently directing undergraduate studies in the Department of History at Brown University. His upcoming work, 'Plantation Goods: Material Culture of American Slavery,' is a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in History and explores the socio-economic dynamics of plantation-produced goods. Rockman integrates economic, labor, and cultural history in investigating the social experiences surrounding the American Revolution and the development of capitalism in the Atlantic world.
