Biography

Seth L. Sanders is an expert in languages and cultures of the ancient Eastern Mediterranean, specializing in Hebrew, Aramaic, Canaanite, and Babylonian. He is a McLeod Chair in Classics and an Emeritus Professor of Religious Studies and Jewish Studies at UC Davis. His research encompasses studies of cuneiform texts related to Israel and Palestine, as well as writings from the ancient Near East. He has authored and edited several works, including 'Invention of Hebrew: Adapa, Enoch: Scribal Culture and Religious Vision in Judea and Babylon.' His current projects, supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Guggenheim Foundation, aim to rethink the composition of the Hebrew Bible, utilizing an open-access presentation framework. Additionally, he is interested in the intersection of ancient and modern poetic ritual performance in religious texts, particularly focusing on the 'Songs of Sabbath Sacrifice' and their relation to contemporary music, including that of Black Sabbath.
