Dr. Seth Watkins

Biography

Seth Watkins is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Engineering Graduate Professional Programs at Duke University, where he has been involved since 2011. He held a previous appointment as an Adjunct Professor in the Thomas Lord Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science from 1997 to 2017. An alumnus of Duke, Seth earned his B.S.E., M.S., Ph.D., and J.D. from the same institution, with a focus on high-temperature superconductors. He has considerable experience at the intersection of law and engineering, having implemented courses on computer-aided design and design thinking for engineers. Seth draws on his extensive background in private legal practice in Washington, D.C., where he has represented a range of clients in intellectual property and technology cases. This includes actions in federal courts and administrative agencies, with significant involvement in pro bono work, particularly for veterans. Seth has made contributions to several academic publications and taught courses in intellectual property law at the Catholic University of America, further illustrating his commitment to bridging engineering and legal disciplines.
