Dr. Seth Whidden

Biography

Seth Whidden is a Professor of French Literature at Queen's College, University of Oxford, where he specializes in modern literature written in French. His research primarily focuses on poetry, delving into themes such as subjectivity, authority, collaboration, and reading practices, exploring the works of notable authors including Baudelaire, Verlaine, and Rimbaud. Whidden has contributed significantly to the field as an editor of the journal Nineteenth-Century French Studies and has been recognized with the Phoenix Prize for Significant Editorial Achievement in 2016. His teaching includes undergraduate courses in French language and literature of the modern period, particularly the nineteenth century, and he is engaged in supervising DPhil students in related areas. His notable publications include works on the cultural history of the velocipede in France and critical editions of modern poetry. He is also actively involved in various research groups and associations related to French literature and its cultural contexts.
