Dr. Seyla Benhabib

Biography

Seyla Benhabib is a Senior Research Scholar and Adjunct Professor at Columbia Law School, as well as an affiliate faculty member of the Department of Philosophy at Columbia University. She served as the Eugene Meyer Professor of Political Science and Philosophy at Yale University from 2001 to 2020. Benhabib has held various prestigious positions, including the James S. Carpentier Visiting Professor of Law at Columbia Law School in Spring 2019. Her scholarship addresses social and political thought, particularly focusing on 20th-century German thought and the works of Hannah Arendt. Over several decades, she has gained recognition for her contributions to migration and citizenship studies, feminist theory, and democratic theory. Among her notable recognitions is the Guggenheim Fellowship in 2011. She has been associated with various research institutions across the United States and Europe. Additionally, Benhabib organized Istanbul Seminars between 2009-2015, promoting intercultural cooperation. She has been involved with multiple editorial boards and has delivered significant lectures across esteemed universities globally.
