Biography

Shagufta K Bhangu is a Lecturer and GTA Lead PGR Deputy Director at the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine, King's College London. She previously worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate on a Wellcome-funded project, 'Grid Oncology: Remaking Cancer Care in India' from 2020 to 2022. Shagufta holds a Master's degree and an MPhil in Sociology from the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi, and a PhD in Sociology and Social Anthropology from Shiv Nadar University, which she completed in 2021. She was a Fulbright Doctoral Scholar in 2017-2018, participating in a joint medical anthropology programme between the University of California, San Francisco, and the University of California, Berkeley. Shagufta is a member of the Culture, Medicine, and Power (CMP) research group and serves as the Deputy Chair for the Anti-Racism Decolonising Steering Committee for 2023-2024. Her research focuses on pain and grief in cancer care, medical anthropology, South Asian studies, and the intersections of epistemics, evidence, and expertise. Her ethnographic work has extensively studied the medicalisation of pain and the socio-cultural and economic contexts surrounding illness in eastern India, particularly in the states of Bengal and Assam.
