Dr. Shahram Shirani

Biography

Shahram Shirani is a Professor and holds the L. R. Wilson/Bell Canada Chair in Data Communications at McMaster University. He is a senior member of the IEEE and has an extensive background in multimedia, signal processing, and communication systems. He leads the Multimedia Signal Processing Lab, which focuses on research in several interconnected areas, including Computer Vision, Biomedical Image Processing, Multimedia Computing Systems, and Multimedia Communication Networks. His work encompasses advanced techniques for Signal Compression in Multimedia Communications, Data Indexing and Retrieval, and the development of Multimedia Hardware Architectures and Standards. His contributions also include editorial roles for prominent IEEE journals. Dr. Shirani obtained his Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from Isfahan University of Technology, followed by a Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering from Amirkabir University of Technology, and lastly, a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of British Columbia. His research interests are broad and impactful, contributing significantly to the fields of image and video processing, as well as VLSI architectures for real-time processing applications.
