Biography

In the past six years, Shahria Alam has been extensively involved in research related to smart materials and their structural applications, particularly in seismic rehabilitation of deteriorated structures and performance-based design of reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, and masonry structures. He is a recipient of several awards and scholarships for his significant research contributions recognized by professional bodies and institutions. Before joining the University of British Columbia Okanagan, Alam worked on various industrial projects as a structural engineer with Halcrow Yolles in Toronto and JNE Consulting Ltd. in Hamilton. Some notable projects include the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and the City Center in Las Vegas. Currently, Alam is engaged in various industrial projects in British Columbia. His research interests include smart materials, seismic design guidelines, progressive collapse analysis of structures, and green concrete made from industrial wastes.
