Shakeel Mowlaboccus is an Adjunct Research Fellow at the Marshall Centre of the University of Western Australia. Originally from Mauritius, he completed his BSc(Hons) at UWA in 2013, after which he was awarded an International Postgraduate Research Scholarship to pursue his PhD at UWA, completing it in 2018. His doctoral thesis focused on 'Molecular Epidemiology of Antimicrobial Resistance in Pathogenic Neisseria meningitidis in Western Australia', where he used whole genome sequencing to characterize Neisseria meningitidis isolates circulating in Western Australia from 2000 to 2014. He identified and characterized clonal expansions of penicillin-resistant strains in the region. Following his PhD, Mowlaboccus has broadened his expertise in investigating antimicrobial resistance mechanisms in bacterial pathogens such as Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecium, and Escherichia coli. His research interests include Meningococcal disease, antimicrobial resistance, microbial genetics, and whole-genome sequencing.
