Biography

Shalini Nair is an Early Career Leverhulme Fellow and Research Associate in Sociological & Cultural Studies at the University of Glasgow. Her research primarily focuses on abolitionist approaches to justice for survivors of sexual violence in India, particularly among marginalized communities. Shalini holds a PhD in Gender Studies from the University of Sussex and an MSc in Development Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. Her PhD research was funded by the University of Sussex's School of Law, Politics, and Sociology, which awarded her the Adam Weiler Doctoral Impact Award. She has also worked as a national journalist for leading Indian newspapers for fifteen years, earning numerous prestigious awards for her contributions to social policy analysis. In addition to her research, Shalini has taught modules in Criminology, Sociology, Gender Studies, and International Development at the University of Sussex. Her research interests encompass gender-based violence, structural inequality, abolition and justice, intersectionality studies, feminist theory, decolonial approaches, and critical disability studies. She actively engages in civil society initiatives and serves on the board of directors for various organizations focused on survivors' rights.
