Dr. Shalizeh Patel

Biography

Shalizeh Shelly Patel is a Professor and Associate Dean for Patient Care at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Dentistry. With a focus on clinical restorative dentistry, Dr. Patel is responsible for designing the didactic, lab, and clinic-based teaching curriculum in operative dentistry and simulation. She served as the Director of Clinical Simulation from July 2016 to June 2022 and has been instrumental as a principal investigator and collaborator on various research projects concentrated on caries diagnosis and management, advancements in teaching and learning, laser dentistry, and virtual reality in healthcare. Dr. Patel's dedication to education and research has resulted in multiple scholarly publications and presentations at regional, national, and international levels. She received the ADEA/Colgate-Palmolive Co. Excellence in Teaching Award in 2019 and the Academy of Laser Dentistry's T.H. Maiman Award for Excellence in Laser Research. In 2020, she was inducted into the University of Texas Kenneth I. Shine, MD, Academy of Health Science Education as a Distinguished Teaching Professor. Throughout her career, Dr. Patel has been recognized with several accolades, including the John H. Freeman Award for Faculty Teaching and multiple Dean’s Excellence Awards for teaching and mentoring. She completed the ADEA Leadership Institute and the UTHealth Health Educators Fellowship Program, earning her master’s degree in education with a focus on curriculum and instruction in health science education from the University of Houston in 2019.
