Dr. Shamsuddin Akhtar

Biography

Shamsuddin Akhtar, MD, is a Professor of Anesthesiology and Pharmacology at Yale School of Medicine, known for his contributions to clinical anesthesiology and critical care. He is board certified in Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Akhtar has conducted groundbreaking studies indicating that elderly patients are often administered higher than recommended doses of intravenous induction anesthetics, leading to an increased incidence of hypotension during anesthetic induction. He is currently involved in a clinical study using the Multicenter Perioperative Outcomes Group (MPOG) database to analyze the relationship between anesthetic induction dose and clinically significant hypotension in patients aged 65 and older. He has authored a textbook titled “Principles of Geriatric Critical Care,” published by Cambridge University Press. Additionally, Dr. Akhtar has held leadership positions such as Past-President of the Society for the Advancement of Geriatric Anesthesia (SAGA) and is a Board Member for the American Society of Anesthesiology. He is also dedicated to mentorship and educating future medical professionals, citing it as a fulfilling aspect of his career.
