Biography

Shamsuddin Akhtar, MD, is a professor of anesthesiology and pharmacology at Yale School of Medicine and a nationally recognized educator in clinical anesthesiology. He is board certified in Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Akhtar's research focuses on improving anesthesia techniques for elderly patients, particularly those aged 65 and older. His studies highlight how elderly patients are often prescribed higher doses of intravenous induction anesthetics, which can lead to hypotension and a subsequent need for rescue pressor therapy. Currently, he is involved in a clinical study utilizing the Multicenter Perioperative Outcomes Group (MPOG) database to investigate the relationship between anesthetic induction doses and hypotension in surgical patients of varying ages. He has authored the textbook “Principles of Geriatric Critical Care” published by Cambridge University Press. As a committed mentor, he values the education of the next generation of medical professionals and has had significant involvement in various professional organizations, including serving as Past-President of the Society for the Advancement of Geriatric Anesthesia.
