Shane Bateman graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon in 1991. After working in a rural mixed animal practice, he completed a small animal internship from 1993 to 1994 and a residency in Emergency and Critical Care (E/CC) from 1994 to 1997 at the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC). He subsequently served as a clinical track faculty member at Ohio State University from 1998 to 2008, where he developed E/CC and Community Practice programs and oversaw a rotating small animal internship-training program. Returning to Canada in 2009, Shane has actively participated in a number of animal welfare and human-animal bond initiatives and is a board member of the Guelph Humane Society. He leads the Guelph Cat Population Taskforce and serves as the Regional Co-Director of Community Veterinary Outreach. Shane is dedicated to providing free preventive veterinary care for pets owned by the homeless or those at risk of homelessness, and he is passionate about involving veterinary students in these activities. His research interests include Community Engaged Service Learning, Veterinary Palliative Care, and the assessment and management of critically ill patients.
